Corry Station Youth Center
Corry Station Youth Center
Project summary :
A major goal of this project was to provide a facility with spaces that help support the mission of the Youth Center program: “To promote the children’s awareness through community involvement, provide opportunities for active learning and support the social and emotional needs of children.”
This new construction project involved building a one-story building designed with an approximate net area of 9,800 SF along with a 500 SF drop off/pick-up area. The facility design included youth activity rooms, teen lounge and exterior patio, expansive commons area, administrative spaces, and building support areas. Site improvements included a covered open air sports court, playground, and resurfacing and striping of the existing parking lot.
The facility complements the existing, adjacent Child Development Center (CDC) located to the north. The general facility size relates well to the adjacent buildings in shape, form, and color. The attachment of a drop-off/pickup entry canopy with columns provides an added dimension creating a lower level roof plane for a more human scale entry point.
The exterior walls are a painted split-face CMU with a CMU backup system. Design elements for exterior windows and materials including accent trim and canopies for the facility followed the Installation Appearance Plan for Corry Station.
The design and construction comply with the requirements of the American Disabilities Act Architectural Guidelines (ADAAG), the American Barriers Act (ABA), and the Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards (UFAS).
Our sustainable design achieved a Silver rating per the US Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system for New Construction version NC 2009 (LEED v3.0). The sustainable design plan was to provide a balance between sustainability and cost while still maintaining a functional environment for both youth and adults.
