U-112 Barracks Building Renovation

U-112 Barracks Building Renovation

Project summary :

We renovated an existing building constructed in 1970 to be used for enlisted unaccompanied personnel housing (BEQ E1/E4). The project began with demolition and removal of asbestos containing materials, including pipe insulation and additional flooring discovered during demolition. After interior demolition, extensive structural and architectural repairs had to be designed and made. We also added a new elevator and retrofit the building in compliance with At/FP (Anti-terrorism/Force Protection) provisions. Site work included demolition and replacement of all asphalt and concrete pavements, the existing steam service, sanitary main, and water main to the building. We also added new hardscape, landscaping, and parking lot. The building achieved a LEED Silver rating.

Upon completion, the renovated building included 40 two-person bedrooms, lounges, laundry room, meeting room, duty office, quarterdeck, and a vending area.

The building was dedicated and named Mayo Hall after Petty Officer Mark Mayo, who lost his life protecting his fellow sailors on their ship. His exceptionally brave actions saved the lives of four watch-standers and ensured the safety of the entire crew of USS MAHAN (DDG 72).
